Hypoxic Induction of Anoxia Tolerance in Root Tips of Zea mays.
When root tips of fully aerobic, intact maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings are made anaerobic, viability normally is only 24 hours or less at 25 degrees C. We find that viability can be extended to at least 96 hours if seedlings are given a hypoxic pretreatment for 18 hours by sparging the solution with 4% O(2) in nitrogen (v/v) before anoxia. Fully aerobic root tips (sparged with 40% O(2)) had very...
متن کاملPatterns of incorporation of (3H)galactose by cells of Zea mays root tips.
['H]galactose shows a selective pattern of uptake distribution in the apical portion of the root tip of Zea mays. In cells entering division it is incorporated into the Golgi apparatus within 10 min and is transferred from that organelle to the forming cell plate. The pattern of uptake suggests a specific biochemical activity on the part of the Golgi apparatus at the time of division so far as ...
متن کاملRoot cortical aerenchyma improves the drought tolerance of maize (Zea mays L.).
Root cortical aerenchyma (RCA) reduces root respiration in maize by converting living cortical tissue to air volume. We hypothesized that RCA increases drought tolerance by reducing root metabolic costs, permitting greater root growth and water acquisition from drying soil. To test this hypothesis, recombinant inbred lines with high and low RCA were observed under water stress in the field and ...
متن کاملSalicylic Acid Induced Salinity Tolerance in Maize (zea Mays)
Salicylic acid (SA) a naturally occurring plant hormone is an essential signal molecule recognized to have diverse effects on biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. The present study was planned to investigate the role of SA in salt tolerance of maize. Experiment was conducted to study the SA induce physiological and biochemical changes in two genotypes of maize viz., Sahiwal-2002 and EV-20 in th...
